Steam & Fury

Steam and Fury 2025 hosted a painting competition in following categories: best single model, best unit, best large model, open category. Also we awarded the best painted played team/roster/army in every tournament. There was several entries for every category and WTC painting awarded painter Antti Jussila was judging the competition.

Best single model:
Joonas Heinone won with his Modok from MCP

Best unit:
Once again Joonas Heinonen, with his Winter Korps Infantry unit from Warmachine.

Best Large:
Mika Leppi-Aho won with his Crusible Guard colossal.

Open category:
Open category went to Riku Siimesvaara with his Zacchaeus, The Winter’s Chill bunny rider.

Best Warmachine army:
Mika Leppi-Aho won with his Crusible Guard army.

Best Marvel: Crisis Protocol:
Marcus Ericsson was awarded for his Cabal/Legion of the Lost roster.

Best Guild Ball:
Guild Ball players decided to give this award to Elli Parkkari as this was her first major tournament. Unfortunately I did not take any pictures of her paint work.

Best in Show:
Best is Show award went to Joonas Heinonen for his Modok.

All winners received some random paint sets that where something that no-one would typically just buy 🙂

Steam and Fury 2026 was held at Hotel Valloni and their new congress center. There was tournaments in three different games: Warmachine, Marvel: Crisis Protocol and Guild Ball.

Warmachine

20 players participated in the Warmachine tournament. Format was that after 3 rounds we did a top 8 cut and those then decided the averall tournament winner, players that did not make top 8 cut played a “hunt for the wooden spoon” tournament for the last place.

After 3 rounds we had the top 8 resolved and last places where decided on the 2nd tie-breaker.

After that we had another 3 rounds and I seeded the first games in the final so that 1st played against 8th, 2nd vs 7th etc. Last years winner Olov experienced his 1st Steam and Fury defeat in the 5th round against Samu, when Longshank decided that we would play Storm Legion vs Storm Legion and Dusk vs Dusk mirrors. Mathias and Samu faced off in the Final, a classic Sweden versus Finland battle. Samu emerged as the winner of the final and cut the tradition of some Swede always winning the Finnish Master title.

The Hunt for the Wooden Spoon ended up by Albin taking the free entry for the next event:

Most important part was that everyone was happy in the end.

Marvel: Crisis Protocol

MCP tournament was official Grand Tournament and for the title of Finnish Master. 14 players played out 6 rounds and the system was that we just added more rounds until 6 was full. Antti was the only player with unbeated record with his Inhuman roster.

Guild Ball

After many years Guild Ball made a return in Steam and Fury. There was 8 players battling it out for the Finnish Master title. Initial idea was to play a 7 round round-robin for this event, but plans changed when few players could not make it on the second day. So we played normal 3 round tournament on saturday and another smaller tournament on sunday.

Conclusion

Venue was excellent for gaming. Lots of space, good air conditioning and overall everything just worked. In total there was 42 players at the event and once again growth from the previous year.

Due to popular demand from previous years, next year there will be a “real” painting competition happening at the event!

There will be following open categories:

Best Miniature, any single miniature from any gaming system.

Best Unit / Team / Roster / what ever entity that contains more then one model. For example a warmachine unit, MCP team, GB team etc.

Best Large Model, a model on larger base in the game system. For example MCP/GB model on a large base, warmachine heavy warbest or colossal etc.

Open, anything that does not fit into above gategories or you just want take part in this. Diorama, bust etc. cool thing you have spent time to perfect.

The painting competition is “open”, so if you feel like it, then come by just with your artwork and take part just in the painting competition and while there, get a feel for the gaming action. I will collect a 10€ entry fee for the painting competition participants for “non gamers”.

Other rules:
– Same model only for one category.
– I will do my best that painted models are not harmed during the competition / display, but cannot guarantee this. We try do our best that the displayed models are not touched during display / judging.
– Deadline for registering a model is sunday morning 10am (if you are not able to spend the night at or near the event and want to take part)
– Award ceremony will be held on sunday afternoon around 14-16.

I will also be awarding best painted played army, team, roster from each gaming system. So #playitpainted.

Disclaimer: This is the 1st time I’m hosting a painting competition, so the might be some changes to schedule etc how things are done as I will have to improvise some parts most likely. So apologies for that.

Judge for the painting competition was Mr. Timo Valo, an internationally awarded painter.

Tournament is officially over! Thanks for everyone that came over. In total there was 38 players, 18 in Warmachine and 20 in Marvel.

Tournament format was made so that there was quaranteed 6 rounds.

In Warmachine we first played 3 rounds in 18 player tournament.

In Marvel: Crisis Protocol the 20 players where first divided into two pods and then top 4 from both qualified for the final, “middle” 4 into another tournament and bottom 2 into “wooden spoon” tournament, which was then played as 3 round round robin.
